Life in the UK Test for ILR: Settlement Applicants Guide

Indefinite leave to remain (ILR) — also called settlement — is a major milestone on many UK visa routes. For most applicants aged 18–65, passing the Life in the UK test is a required step before you can submit your ILR application.

Is the test required for ILR?

In most cases, yes. If you are between 18 and 65 and applying for ILR, you will usually need a valid Life in the UK pass certificate. Some applicants are exempt based on age or health — always check GOV.UK for your specific visa route.

The test itself is identical to the one taken for British citizenship: 24 questions, 45 minutes, 75% pass mark, English only, at an approved test centre.

When to take the test in your ILR timeline

Plan backwards from your visa expiry date:

Milestone	Suggested timing
Start studying	2–3 months before you plan to apply
Pass the Life in the UK test	4–8 weeks before application submission
Gather remaining documents	In parallel with test prep
Submit ILR application	Before your current visa expires

Leaving the test until the last week is risky. A fail means waiting seven days and paying again — time you may not have if your visa is close to expiring.

Same test, different application

A pass certificate from the Life in the UK test can be used for both ILR and later citizenship, as long as it is still valid under current rules when you apply. You do not need to take the test twice if your certificate is accepted for both applications.

English language requirements for ILR

Many ILR routes also require proof of English at B1 speaking and listening. This is not the Life in the UK test — it is a separate requirement, often met through an approved Secure English Language Test (SELT).
