Life in the UK Test for British Citizenship: When to Take It
By UK Companion
British citizenship through naturalisation usually requires passing the Life in the UK test. It is not the only requirement — you also need to meet residence rules, good character standards, and often a separate B1 English language test — but the handbook test is the step most applicants can start preparing for early.
Where the test fits in naturalisation
For most adults aged 18–65, the process looks like this:
- Check you meet the residence and eligibility rules on GOV.UK
- Prepare for and pass the Life in the UK test
- Gather documents (pass certificate, ID, proof of residence, English language proof if required)
- Submit your citizenship application
You typically need a valid pass certificate when you apply. Many people pass the test first, then submit the application — that way a failed attempt does not delay your whole timeline.
When should you book the test?
Book when you are consistently scoring above 75% in practice — ideally 80% or higher in timed mocks. Each failed attempt costs around £50 and you must wait at least seven days before retaking.
A sensible timeline:
- 8–12 weeks before you want to apply: start studying the handbook and practising questions
- 4–6 weeks in: do timed mock exams to simulate test day
- 2–3 weeks before your target application date: sit the official test if your practice scores are strong
What the test covers for citizenship
The test is the same whether you are applying for citizenship or ILR. Twenty-four multiple-choice questions in English, based on the official handbook across five chapters: values, geography, history, modern society, and government.
Citizenship applicants do not get different questions — the difference is when and why you need the certificate in your application journey.
B1 English is separate
Do not confuse the Life in the UK test with the B1 English speaking and listening requirement. They are two different exams with different providers and rules. UK Companion helps you prepare for the handbook test only.

How to prepare efficiently
- Read or summarise each handbook chapter — study notes in the app can speed this up
- Practise with instant feedback — know why an answer is wrong, not just that it is
- Do timed mocks — build stamina for 24 questions in 45 minutes
- Review mistakes — weak topics repeat on test day if you skip them
