The Life in the UK test pass mark is 75%. That means you need 18 correct answers out of 24. It sounds straightforward — until you realise how many people fail by just one or two questions.

Why 75% matters

The pass threshold is fixed. There is no partial credit for "almost passing." You either get 18 or more correct, or you do not pass.

In practice:

  • 18/24 = pass (75.0%)
  • 17/24 = fail (70.8%)
  • 16/24 = fail (66.7%)

One careless mistake on an easy question can push you under the line. That is why consistent practice matters more than cramming the night before.

What a good practice score looks like

During preparation, aim higher than 75%. If you are consistently scoring 80–85% in timed mock exams, you have a comfortable buffer for test-day nerves.

Practice averageWhat it suggests
Below 70%More study needed — focus on weak chapters
70–79%Close — review mistakes and retest
80%+Strong position for test day
90%+Very confident — keep practising to retain

Common reasons people fail

  1. Skipping the handbook topics — especially history and government
  2. Only doing untimed practice — the 45-minute clock surprises people
  3. Not reviewing wrong answers — the same gaps appear on test day
  4. Confusing similar facts — dates, Acts of Parliament, and historical figures blur together
  5. Overconfidence on "easy" questions — values and modern society questions still trip people up

A practical study plan

Week 1–2: Read each handbook chapter. Do untimed practice after each one.

Week 3: Switch to timed mock exams. Track your score against the 75% line.

Week 4: Review every question you got wrong. Do a final mock exam two days before your booking.

Test day: Read each question carefully. If unsure, eliminate obviously wrong answers first.
